And so it begins...I 'm attempting to do a blog of my fossil adventures. Where do I begin? I guess from the beginning since I have bits and pieces of memory of those days still intact. I'm definitely not getting any younger! It started back in 2005, maybe 2007...Sometime during those years I had in care my young nephews. I wanted to get them involved in the outdoors and told them stories of my fossil hunts and finds when I was about their age. Of course their curiosity knew no bounds they wanted to experience what I experienced and off we went. The first site we visited was a rock/road cut along Highway 31 in Hoover. Back then, there were no trees nor weeds in front of the rock face...just bare rock in sedimentary layers and this huge visible coal seam. I knew about sedimentary rock layers and this was just a good a place to start looking. We found lots of plant fossils, mostly embedded in rock that couldn't be removed...that was our sign there were fossils present. We scanned the entire rock face as well as the fallen stone at the bottom of the rock face. There were remnants of small broken up fossils but nothing complete to take home. This is where I got hooked and so did the boys and the adventures began...
The picture above is the rock/road cut with my nephews in front of it. The boys are tiny standing in front of that rock face and right behind them in that dark area is a huge coal deposit.
