Ichno Fossils

Ichno Fossils are also known as "Trace Fossils". They provide us with indirect evidence of life through footprints, tracks, burrows, borings, and poop left behind by animals or insects. Several are featured here were found in Jefferson and Walker County. The rock formations the trace fossils come are called the Parkwood and Pottsville Formations. This particular area was an ancient mudflat and swamps during the Carboniferous Period 300 million years ago. Scientific specific names were given to different type trackways, like Diplichnites, Selennichnites, Protichnites, Conostichus, Tonganoxichnus, and Tenidium Serpentenium....were given to different trackways but some of the track makers will remain a mystery.
